Sean Greaney looks past the curvaceous silhouettes, blinding neon and alluring latex to take a sober look at selling sex.
The most genuine, knowledgeable and personable interviewees I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to: a former porn star-cum-director and businesswoman, a radio personality and former marketing manager for Australia’s largest wholesaler of adult products, Sexpo’s general manager, Club X’s chief operations officer, and the leader of the Australian Sex Party and Eros (the industry’s peak body). The number of conjunctions in their titles is indicative of the industry – to work in it you must be multi-skilled, talented and passionate. A note for the cynics: by the end of this feature you’ll have consumed the pudding’s proof.
If you’re reading this at work, in the living room or on public transport, I’ll hazard you’ve folded the front cover over the back and are racing through these introductory few paragraphs to hide the opening double-page spread. I’ll also obnoxiously hazard, never mind any moralistic repulsions, you will make it to the end of this feature purely out of that voyeuristic curiosity I clearly share.
