This discussion is related to the article 13/1300/1800 now open to SMS
SMS to 13 numbers has been available since late 2008.
Marketers should be aware that SMS to 13 is NOT available for Hutchison and Vodafone users - don't have the statistics to hand but this is a significant proportion of the market.
On the other hand, you can get a standard mobile number (04xx xxx xxx) and promote that, which makes the service available to all mobile users. In this case there's more to remember, but go for a number which either 'mirrors' your 13 number or makes a meaningful word to help consumers lock it in their memories.
So the choice is a 'simpler' response mechanism with limited reach or a slightly more complex mechanism with full reach. I'd say look at where you're promoting. Print or internet, go for the reach. TV or radio, the single 13 number is probably a better bet, although we do have clients who do really good business on TV with a standard 04xx number.

Other advantages of adding SMS as a response mechanism:
- increased overall response
- you collect a mobile contact number for every SMS respondent so you have a marketing database
- you can use different SMS keywords in different media and assess which advertising works best and optimise future spend
- you can put really clever interactive messaging on the back of the response to qualify respondents further. I'd give you an example but I need client approval first ;)

I will recommend using ePostMailer for all bulk email marketing needs. Its the best free email marketing software I have used so far.
