How to break into advertising agencies

Advertise with us

DM Creative School is one of the best way to get your start as an art director or copywriter.

For two nights a week over 10 weeks, you can collude with the most awarded senior creatives and CDs in the country and develop all the practical creative skills you’ll need. And because the Creative School is held inside some of Australia’s top advertising agencies, you’ll also get direct, hands-on experience of the working environment.

At the end of the course you’ll be armed with a portfolio of your own work, lots of know-how gleaned from industry insiders and a bunch of the best contacts to help you land a job. Over a third of last year’s students were employed by an agency within just six months of graduating, so if you’re looking to kick-start a creative career it’d be a crime not to take part.

Creative School Melbourne kicks off in just two weeks and there are only a handful of places left.

I spent 12 weeks at AWARD school, before the internet was invented. It was THE smartest thing I ever did. If you want to do well at these things (and get a fine career) you have to either a) be a genius or b) work very hard. Break a leg kids and say thank you to your teachers.

Completely agree. I too did AWARD school and recommend it highly; it helped me achieve my short and long-term dreams. Two big lessons I learned that may sound obvious but were a revelation to me at the time: First, just because someone looks creative doesnt mean they are. I was a marketing Product Manager at the time I did AWARD so I showed up in a suit feeling like, well, a suit. Everyone else looked so cool and edgy. In the end I was judged one of the top 10 students and went on to become an award winning copywriter. Interestingly, most of the other top 10 students were as uncool as me. And secondly, dont take criticism of your work personally. If your work is having rubbish tipped on it, it just means your work is crap nothing more. Try again.
