Hungry Jack’s and VB trade ads: ‘The Beers Are Better at VB’

The end of last week saw Hungry Jack’s recreate Victoria Bitter’s well-known ‘Hard Earned Thirst’ spot, and so today VB struck back with a copycat ad of its own.

The tagline ‘a hard-earned thirst needs a big cold beer’ has stuck with the Victoria Bitter brand for more than half a century, featuring in TV commercials from 1968. This past Friday, Hungry Jack’s paid homage to the famous spot with its own, ‘A Hard Earned Hunger Need[sic] a Big Juicy Whopper’.

The 30-second Hungry Jack’s spot follows the poetic form of the traditional VB ads, featuring hard-working Australians quenching their thirst (hunger) with a Hungry Jack’s Whopper – narrated by Australian YouTube creator Ethan Marrell, more commonly known as Ozzy Man Reviews.

The following day, VB’s response saw it borrowing back some of Hungry Jack’s famous advertising tropes – flaming background, slow-motion ingredient tossing – captioned with ‘The Beers Are Better At Victoria Bitter’.

The post accompanying the ad reads, “Hungry Jack’s… they say imitation is the Very Best form of flattery.”

VB Hungry Jacks Homage

Late last year, VB invited fans to remix the iconic jingle, submitting entries via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the #VB50yearsofcheers hashtag.

“VB is calling on rockers and rappers, singers and soloists, or just anyone to have a crack, to enter,” said VB in a release.

The tune to the ad was originally composed by Elmer Bernstein as the theme for the 1960 western The Magnificent Seven.
