New Tassie tourism campaign needed, says Opposition

On the back of Qld Tourism’s ‘World’s greatest job’ campaign, Tasmania’s Opposition is urging the government to immediately start an aggressive tourism marketing campaign to encourage more people interstate to visit the apple isle.

Despite the success of Tassie Tourism’s ‘Tasmania the movie’ campaign, the state’s Tourism Council is concerned hundreds of jobs will be lost to the economic downturn.

Opposition tourism spokesman Jeremy Rockliff says the government needs to increase funding for marketing, because tourism-related businesses will suffer over the next year.

“Recent surveys have pointed to the fact that employers within the tourism industry plan to lay off staff over the next 12 months, we need to combat this. We need to have an aggressive destination marketing campaign so we can boost our tourism industry in Tasmania during theses difficult and challenging times,” asserts Rockcliff.

Following the release of the movie Australia, Tasmania tourism produced it’s own version Tasmania the Movie as its campaign model.

The campaign was said to also have been a reaction to Tasmania’s mistaken omission on the first print run of Australia‘s campaign posters.
