Pacific Magazines has made its first move into the tablet market, launching an iPad edition of Men’s Health.

The August edition of the magazine will be available in both print and iPad app form, with a subscription to the app costing $6.49 per issue or $64 per year. That’s substantially higher than most US and UK iPad magazine, which usually sell for around $2 per issue.

The app will feature additional content, including more automotive content and animated exercise routines. Creative director of Men’s Health, David Ashford, says the exercise routine content of the print magazine was one of the most popular sections. “We know our readers love our exercise routines, for example, so we can now show the full range of movement through animation. Add to that bespoke elements like a format-friendly contents page and a personal workout log, and I think we’ve created something that will really excite readers looking for their favourite magazine in digital form.”

The August issue will also features behind-the-scenes footage of its cover shoot with swimmer James Magnussen. Advertising featured in the print issue for the month will also be shown in the iPad edition, giving added value to advertisers.

Men’s Health has released a video demonstration of how the new app works (if you can’t see the video below, refresh this page):
