Media Monday: Kapalos quits, Hinch wants her gig and ARN drops $2m on promoting Kiis

The Age has exclusively revealed this morning that Helen Kapalos has resigned from her post as the presenter of tabloid news program, Today Tonight, to take on a senior reporting role on Seven’s current affairs program, Sunday Night.
Today Tonight’s summer host Nick Etchells will reportedly continue to host the show for at least the next fortnight with rumours swirling that Derryn Hinch is vying for the presenting role. Hinch however is currently indisposed with a 50-day jail sentence due to start today for refusing to pay a $100,000 fine for the comments he made in regards to the Jill Meagher court case earlier this year.
Australian viewers maintained their love affair with free to air television in 2013, with figures showing that the free to air networks continued to dominate Australian viewing throughout last year, reaching an 15.2 million Australians daily.
Free to air TV also continued to dominate overall television viewing capturing an 83% of the prime-time metropolitan audience during 2013. Time-shifted viewing also remained popular last year, with 8.6% of viewers time shifted programs.
“Once again free to air has remained the television destination of choice for the overwhelming majority of Australians in 2013,” says Freeview general manager, Liz Ross.
“It’s great news for our industry as we head into 2014, which promises to be one of the most exciting years for free to air TV, and for Australian viewers, since the introduction of digital TV,” she says.
Freeview is also set to launch FreeviewPlus, the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) service later this year.
ARN’s newly rebranded KIIS 1065 launched today with the radio company reportedly spending a whopping $AU2 million on a massive publicity campaign around Sydney with a TVC going to air over the weekend and press and outdoor executions to follow, as they bid to raise the profile of the station.
Kyle and Jackie O have launched their new breakfast show on KIIS 1065 this morning. The pompus pair switched on their ‘golden microphones’ at 6am (AEST) to kick off the stations rebrand.
The radio duo farewelled listeners of their 2Day FM show in November and have been replaced by the ‘yet-to-settle’ four-way program of Jules Lund, Sophie Monk, Merrick Watts and Mel B who have already been on air for a week.

This is also the inaugural week of the new radio ratings system Survey 1, the new ratings will be released on March 11 this year and will mostly likely be the cause of many a stomach ulcer after the almost unprecedented radio shifts that have launched in 2014.
