Barriers blur as social media meets console gaming

Xbox 360 has integrated social networks Facebook and Twitter into its Xbox Live service.

Although Twitter comes across fully-featured, Facebook has received some modification. The interface has been redesigned for the emulation, but functions such as video and Facebook apps were lost.

The move has significant strategic importance for marketers targeting gaming segments and could drive greater social media penetration among gaming communities.

“With Facebook for Xbox, you can update your status, browse updates from your friends and view photos on the big screen. You also can link your Facebook profile to your Xbox Gamertag to find your Facebook friends and connect with them on Xbox Live, said Facebook’s blog.

Sony has announced that it will add Facebook and Twitter functionality to PS3’s in its next update.

This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser, said Eric Lempel, director, PlayStation Network Operations.
