Aussie Idol access goes mobile

Aussie Idol access goes mobile

Fremantle Media and Vodafone Australia are now partners in the current series of Australian Idol, airing on the Ten Network.

This means you can take your love for warbling Aussies with you wherever you go (probably not such a great thing if you’re the person sitting next to a fan on the train).

Official content will be available to mobile users across every network via an official Australian Idol mSite (mobile site), where fans can request a link to the site by texting to a number provided on the site.

Fans will be able to access video recaps of every episode including on-demand access to every performance from the Top 24 onward, video highlights from the first five years of Australian Idol, an exclusive weekly blog, all the latest news and profiles on the 2008 Top 12 finalists, direct from their mobile handset.

Dave Green, general manager mobile advertising at Vodafone Australia explains that instead of customers paying to view the content, it will be subsidised with advertising.

“Vodafone is delighted to be able to offer compelling mobile content to fans when they want it, at no charge,” says Green.

Ben Liebmann, vice president of licensing at Fremantle Media, says “With the official Australian Idol website, we are delivering a true 360 degree experience across television, online and mobile platforms… we are delivering maximum value to our fans, and greater opportunities for advertisers and sponsors to align themselves with one of the world’s most recognised television brands.”

For those of you who have fond memories of Zhou (Flynn) Liu and the ‘Bird is the word’ guy, then access to Idol’s archives is a dream come true.

But before you fire up the net to download all the details, take note – all the videos require 3G capable handsets and 3G coverage (more information on this is available on Vodafone’s website if you want to see if your handset is compatible).

The good thing for Vodafone customers is that browsing and use of this site is free, but if you’re with another carrier data charges may apply.

All that glitters may come with some restrictions…
