B2B group buyer plays Abbott’s package for PR

B2B group buying site AdviDeals lobbies federal opposition leader Tony Abbot to sell advertising space on his Speedos to raise money for surf life savers.

Last week we reported on a new entrant to the B2B group buying field. The site mentioned in that article, Brisbane-based AdviDeals, is now apparently lobbying federal opposition leader Tony Abbott to open up his famous (infamous?) pair of Speedos to advertising. It’s all in the name of charity, of course (and perhaps just a little publicity for AdviDeals) with the money intended for Surf Life Saving Australia, should Mr Abbott agree to participate.

The advertising deals company wrote to Mr Abbott in Canberra to propose the ‘Cozzies for a Cause’ campaign. Advertising space on the mad monk’s trunks will be marketed to prospective buyers by AdviDeals and sold via an auction-style bidding process on its site.

AdviDeals director, Mike Brown, says that in the lead-up to the 2011-12 beach patrol season and the amount of coverage Mr Abbott’s swimming briefs are likely to enjoy, this represents an “opportunity for marketers to ‘smuggle’ their brand into any number of mass-media channels.”

It’s also a good opportunity for puns, so Brown continues: “An opportunity to auction a prime – possibly ‘prime-minister’ – advertising space like this is too good to pass.”

A response from Mr Abbott is hoped to be received by the end of next week, with AdviDeals releasing a ‘cheeky’ video and Facebook site – with 1677 ‘likes’ at the time of posting – to attract public support in the hope it will influence Mr Abbott to approve the proposal.
