Apple unveils iPhone X, “the future of the smartphone”

Apple has launched its iPhone X, iPhone 8 and Apple Watch Series 3.

The new phone boasts a range of new features, including wireless charging, improved cameras, all screen display, OLED panel with true blacks and face ID.

The 64BG iPhone X comes with a hefty $1579 price tag, and a 256GB version will set customers back $1829. Phones can be pre-ordered as of 27 October and will be available from 3 November.

The Next Web noticed one new update which is likely to “piss off” phone carriers: the carrier name will no longer be visible in the status bar. Users will have to swipe down on the display’s top ‘ears’ to see which network they are connected to.

“For more than a decade, our intention has been to create an iPhone that is all display,” says Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “The iPhone X is the realisation of that vision. With the introduction of iPhone ten years ago, we revolutionised the mobile phone with Multi-Touch. iPhone X marks a new era for iPhone — one in which the device disappears into the experience,” he says.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were also unveiled, with a similar list of updates. Cameras on the 8 Plus are specifically geared for augmented reality (AR) experiences, each one being calibrated with new gyroscopes and accelerometers for accurate motion tracking.

New Apple watches, Series 3, brings built-in cellular technology to the fan favourites.

“We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
