Alannah Hill the person splits with Alannah Hill the brand – awkwardness to follow?

Fashion designer Alannah Hill will no longer be associated with the fashion label she created in 1997 and gave her name. Both Hill and her employer, Factory X, have been chilly on the details of the split, with Hill saying she’ll stay in the fashion business and a statement from Factory X making no mention of Alannah Hill, the person.

In a statement, Hill announced she had terminated her employment with the Melbourne-based business, Factory X, which has financially backed the brand for 16 years.

Factory X will now run all 42 Alannah Hill stores around the country independently of Hill, who will not have any input into any aspect of the brand that bears her name.

In a statement released yesterday Hill says: “I am deeply saddened to make this monumental decision. I was completely devoted to my label and all that it represents to girls Australia-wide.

“My heart, my soul, my every little thing has been poured into creating a brand for girls who love and share my vision of ornamental, sensational and beautiful clothes.

“I won’t be taking a ‘well-earned break’, nor will I be going on safari… My dream is to continue to create fashion that radiates joy and the power of transformation, not just in fashion but in life itself.”

Factory X also released a statement with principal partner and co-founder of Factory X David Heeney saying, “As a brand Alannah Hill has grown over the years with a team of designers and support staff. This dedicated team is now enhanced with the appointment of a group creative director with over 25 years of experience in the London fashion industry.

“The success of Factory X and its multiple brands has in large been due to the collaborative approach taken towards our designing space and we have a fantastic team on board who will continue this creative vision into the future.”

Hill launched the brand in 1997 while working as a sales assistant at boutique store, Indigo, and shortly after received financial backing with Heeney’s Factory X.
