Fox Interactive axes 100 jobs in the UK

Adding to unemployment woes, News Corporation’s digital arm, Fox Interactive Media, is cutting up to 100 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, in the UK.

The cuts will affect staff at a number of the company’s websites including MySpace, Photobucket, Scout Media and Rotten Tomatoes. It is unclear whether the job cuts will influence the company’s Australian operations.

A report by Brand Republic, the cuts are expected to hit image hosting website Photobucket the hardest, which is expected to lose 22 employees. A significant number of jobs are expected to be lost in Fox Interactive Medias corporate offices as well.

A Fox Interactive Media spokesman confirmed that several of the groups within the company’s stable are shedding some jobs and repurposing others.

“This is part of a larger effort we’re making to put FIM in the best possible position to succeed now and, more importantly, to emerge even stronger once the markets recover. Its important to note that we continue to hire in many areas,” says a statement from Fox Interactive.

Social networking website MySpace posted a response, saying that despite the job losses it is still hiring new staff across the board.

MySpace spokesperson, Dani Dudeck, says, “We are constantly aligning our business and resources to focus on the core strategic initiatives of MySpace (and) expect to have more MySpace employees at the end of this fiscal year than we currently have.”

The announcement is an unwelcome addition to the job losses already plaguing the digital sector, following cuts from big-name brands including Google and Microsoft.
