Facebook is an official supporter of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, lending its platform to expand the Games to a global audience

Facebook announced yesterday that it is an official supporter of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). It will work to drive key marketing campaigns, driving ticket sales and launching a series of online content to be shown on the platform prior to and during the Games.

Additionally, Facebook will be broadcasting coverage over Facebook Live from its customised Gold Coast studios.

“Having Facebook Australia onboard means the broader Commonwealth Games community are more connected than ever before,” says Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) chairman Peter Beattie AC, “with platforms like Facebook and Instagram stories allowing Aussies everywhere to feel close to our athletes and share their experiences.”

The Games will use this partnership to expand its global audience, according to Mr Beattie, “athletes and visitors from around the Commonwealth will share their experience at the Games via Facebook promoting the Gold Coast around the world.”

“Over the past year, we’ve seen 15 million Australians on Facebook come together to connect and share with family and friends, with key moments in sport the focus of the conversation” says Facebook Australia and New Zealand managing director William Easton. According to Easton, sport was one of the most popular topics on Facebook in 2017.

A Digital Circle report found sports pages were the seventh most engaging on Facebook overall in 2017, with an average weekly engagement of 26,905 hits. Read our full breakdown of Digital Circle’s report here ».

Social media has become an increasingly important part of marketing in sports, Beattie continues “GC2018 is only the third Commonwealth Games to use social media and will very much be a digital Games.”

The Games are due to kick off on 4 April with the Opening Ceremony at the Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium.
