McDonald’s USA has temporarily sidelined brand mascot Ronald McDonald as a result of creepy clown fears spreading throughout the world.
In light of clown scares freaking out communities worldwide, McDonald’s has made the decision to bench its long time brand mascot Ronald McDonald in the USA.
Citing the “current climate around clown sightings in communities” the fast food giant made the announcement on Tuesday.
“McDonalds and franchisees in the local markets are mindful of the current climate around clown sightings in communities and as such are being thoughtful in respect to Ronald McDonald’s participation in community events for the time being,” a McDonald’s spokeswoman told CNBC.
The clown stories and sightings began in South Carolina, and throughout October have grown in frequency throughout the USA, into Australia and other countries.
McDonald’s has not made it clear as yet how long Ronald will be on hold or how the decision will affect brand events.
