Watch this short film for Prada by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola

When you ask Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola to create a short film, you know what you’re in for and, yet, have no idea what to expect. Prada teamed up with the legendary directing pair on a short film ‘celebrating’ the launch of the brand’s new fragrance, Candy L’Eau.

‘Celebrating’ in this case is one and the same with ‘marketing’, and in that sense the film provides a great example of branded content being let loose creatively. As the fragrance blends white musk, caramel, benzoin, sweet pea and citrus notes, the film does too (in a way).

It stars Léa Seydoux, the face of the Prada Candy range, as the eponymous heroine, caught in a Paris love triangle with two ridiculously good-looking men, with ridiculous hair, spouting ridiculous dialogue. Brilliant.

Cinema

The product is shown three times, as if in commercial breaks to the actual content, in a self-aware, self-deprecating way. The lead character is named Candy, but the product is never shown in situ, and the topic of perfume is never discussed. It’s a film that would be watched obsessively were it released by Anderson and Coppola for any reason. If you’re a fan of either or both of the two, you’ll enjoy this.

This style is becoming somewhat of a specialty of Prada’s, which last year released a short film that, similarly, utilised humour, quirkiness, and star power. The below short film by Roman Polanski stars Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley, and, similarly again, oozes class.
