Aussies’ 2021 in Google searches
Share
It’s been another unpredictable year across the world and in Australia. Whilst the east coast went in and out of lockdown, Western Australia lived a relatively normal year. But, with Australians experiencing different levels of freedom and uncertainty, what were we searching for? Google has produced the searches that dominated Australia in 2021.
There were some key themes that really took over the searches this year:
The pandemic
No surprises that the pandemic continued to be the key focus for Australia. From Googling about vaccines, Delta and even more recently Omicron, COVID was always on our minds.
Sports
Australians continued to be fascinated by sport. The top seven queries overall on Google related to it. From NBA to AFL and the Australian Open, sports news and scores dominated.
DIY
Lockdown dominated a lot of Australians’ lives, and so did DIY. From homemade face masks and candles as well as learning to dance or play the piano, hobbies became central to lockdown boredom.
Meanings
Australians wanted to know the meaning of a lot of words. Emancipation was the most searched word. It was unsurprisingly followed by “gaslighting” which was introduced as a commonly used term.
People
Cleo Smith and William Tyrrell stories dominated the news cycle. As Cleo’s successful rescue warmed hearts around the world, Australians Googled it for continuous updates. We were also curious about our politicians, as Christian Porter was searched for. After making headlines, people wanted to know more about socialite Nadia Bartel and that Kmart plate.
Food
Comfort food was the number one craving for Australians. Gnocchi, lamb shanks and a hug-in-a-bowl minestrone recipes were what we were serving up.
