Digital addiction: digital media consumption to surpass TV this year in US

Digital media consumption will overtake TV viewing in the US for the first time this year, according a report by eMarketer. The report expects digital media consumption to rise as much as 16% this year.

TV consumption is being tipped to drop by less than 3%, but the total amount of digital media consumption is set to rise leading it to overtake TV consumption as a whole.

The average adult’s daily online usage will increase to over five hours a day compared to four hours and 31 minutes spent watching television. Most of the increase in digital viewing will be mobile devices, which the study shows are becoming the primary vehicle for entertainment viewing.

The most significant growth area is on mobile, with adults are estimated to spend an average of two hours and 21 minutes on mobile internet usage, and other nonvoice activities on their phones and tablets, which will work out to be more than they will spend online on desktop and laptop computers.
